Erickson Mediation Institute (EMI) was founded in 1977 in Minnesota. EMI was the first divorce mediation firm in the Midwest and continues to be one of the largest private, full-time and full-service mediation firms. Its founders still own the firm and practice mediation.

Throughout its history, EMI has pioneered innovative mediation methods that are now standards for divorce mediation.

Historical dates

1979
EMI was the first to suggest that couples jointly use neutral appraisers and other experts, rather than each hiring their own.

1982
EMI mediators began offering parenting plans to avoid contests over who would "win" the children.

1990
EMI demonstrated the importance of using "advisory" attorneys rather than adversarial attorneys.

Today, in order to serve couples whose lives are in transition, EMI has formed relationships with mortgage bankers and realtors to provide couples with mortgage services in the middle of the divorce process, instead of waiting until after the divorce has been finalized.
