Mediation Training FAQs

Is there a certification for becoming a mediatior?

No. There is currently no national certification or licensure required for becoming a mediator. However, there are local requirements. In Minnesota, mediation is governed by Minnesota Supreme Court Rule 114. Rule 114 requires that mediators, who are listed on the statewide roster of neutrals, must have taken an approved training. Both our 30 Hour Civil Mediation Training and our 40 Hour Family Mediation Training provide the requisite training to apply to be listed on the Rule 114 roster of neutrals.

Do you have to have a specific education background or degree in order to take mediation training?

No, there is no prerequisite educational background or degree required to become a mediator. Depending on the type of mediations you want to conduct, it is upon the mediator to ensure that they have sufficient knowledge and expertise in the area of mediation they are practicing and professional mediators are required to regularly obtain continuing education.

Is there a need or market for divorce mediators?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is that the increases in the number of divorces coupled with the increase in the number of never-married couples and parents, provides an increased need for qualified professional mediators. However, it can take a lot of effort on the part of the mediator to develop and market his or her mediation practice in order to reach those individuals in need of mediation services.

What is unique about your training?

Steve and Marilyn not only helped develop the curriculum that is used almost exclusively in training, they continue to practice mediation. They have expansive knowledge and expertise in the field of mediation, continue to practice and develop their own skills – which gets passed on to training participants, and continue to take an active role in the development of the Profession of Mediation.

This means that when you attend training through Erickson Mediation Institute, you are getting the most current and up to date knowledge and information about mediation, the practice of mediation, and how to develop your skills and start your own practice.

In addition, participants receive a comprehensive manual, which will act as your reference tool in the future and contains case examples and forms.

Thanks so much for the wonderful training we received from you! It was one of the best I’ve ever been through (and I’ve been through more than my share). I can’t recall the last time I spent 10 hours a day in one chair and was ready for more. I guess time flies when you’re having fun, but when you’re learning something interesting as well. While the training was of first importance, meeting you both and getting to know you better was equally important and enjoyable.
